What Is a Noun?

A noun is a word that refers to a person, place and thing. The category of "things" may seem vague, but in this case it means inanimate objects, abstract ideas and activities. Phrases and other parts of speech can behave like nouns and be the subject in a sentence, such as jogging is a fun exercise. Here, the verb jogging acts like a noun, and it's the subject of the sentence.

Example:
  • This is a dog.
  • This is a cow.

  • That is Jami.

In the first and second sentences, dog and cow means a dog and a cow. The common name of any such animal is called Noun.

In the third and fourth sentences, Smith and Jami refer to the names of two people.

These two names are also Noun.

Kind of Noun

There are mainly two types of nouns:

  1. Concrete Noun.
  2. Abstract Noun.
Concrete Noun: Concrete nouns are nouns that have an external position/ entity and can be perceived by the senses. 

Example: Pen, house, brick, flower etc.

The Concrete Noun is further divided into four parts.

ii. Common Noun
iii. Collective Noun
iv. Material Noun.

So there are five types of nouns in total.

i. Proper Noun:
What is a proper noun? A noun that refers to the name of only one specific person, object/ place is called a Proper Noun.

A Proper Noun denotes one particular person or things as distinct from every other.

Proper Nouns Examples:
  • Rasel is a good student.
  • The Quran is a holy book.
  • The Meghna is a big river.
  • The Ittefaq is daily newspaper.
  • He is a good girl in the class.
  • January is the first month of the year.
  • The great Omar was the Caliph of Islam.
  • You are a Nazrul I see.

ii. Common Noun:

What is common noun? Common noun is the noun that means the common name of a person, object/animal.

A Common Noun denotes no one person/ thing in particular, but in common to all person or things of the some kind.

Common Nouns Examples:
  • He is a good boy.
  • Man is mortal.
  • The dog is a faithful animal.
  • Flower charms us.
  • I live in London.
  • My home town name is Dhaka.
  • You see a big river.
  • The girl is very nice.
  • He is going to school everyday I see.

iii. Collective Noun:
What is a collective noun? Collective Noun is a noun that refers to a group of persons/ objects of the same nationality or similarity, but not to them separately. A Collective Noun is the name of a number (or collection) of person or things taken together and spoken of as one whole.

Collective Nouns Examples:
  • He has joined the army.
  • There are forty students in our class.
  • Our team has won the game.
  • The family consists of ten members.
  • The police have not made any arrests.
  • Our team goes to play a match today.

iv. Material Noun:
What is a material noun? A noun that refers to all parts of an object in the same way, that is, a quantity/ weight that can be measured but cannot be calculated, is called a material noun.

Material Nouns Examples:
  • Water has no colour.
  • Iron is a useful metal.
  • Milk is white.
  • Sugar is sweet.
  • The gold of this ring is pure.
  • The rice of Barisal is fine.

Note: Material noun is the thing that makes up the material/ component of an object. Remember ‘gold’ is a substance noun but ‘ring’ is a noun. 'Wooden metal name' but 'chair' is a common noun. The article does not sit before material nouns.

v. Abstract Noun:

What is an abstract noun? An abstract noun is a noun that expresses the name, condition/ function of a person or thing.

Abstract Noun relates to things which cannot be seen/ touched etc and which are thought of apart grim any objects of sense.

Abstract Nouns Examples:
  • The kindness of Smith is well known.
  • Her judgment is perfect.
  • His honesty is praiseworthy.
  • Poverty is a curse.

Countable and Uncountable Noun

Countable Noun:

There are so many names in the world that can't be counted. Such,  I have some pencils. Here, the amount is known by calculating the word pencil. Now if the question is How many pencils do you have? The answer is five pencils.

First you have to describe the pencils then you have to write. For example, when you can count the names of a person/object, the names will be Countable Noun.

Characteristics of Countable Noun

i. Usually proper, common and collective nouns become Countable Nouns.
ii. Countable Nouns can be both singular and plural from.
iii. Singular Countable Noun is usually preceded by a, an, the, every, each, either, neither etc. Determiners are used.

Examples:
  • Each boy has given a mango.
  • Every students will pass the examination.
  • Some boy is coming to see me.
  • Neither pencil is good.
  • All man must die.
  • The teacher asked me a few questions.
  • Cows are domestic animals.

Uncountable Noun:

There are many names/ objects in the world that cannot be described. Its quantity can be known only by measuring. Such, You drink a glass of milk everyday. Here, the amount of milk cannot be calculated. Now if you can ask, how much milk do you drink everyday? Can you answer that, of course not five milk. Because milk cannot be counted. To answer that question you have to say a glass of milk. That is one glass of milk. Since milk cannot be counted, milk is Uncountable Noun.

Characteristics of Uncountable Noun

i. Usually material and Abstract noun-Uncountable Noun.
ii. Uncountable Noun does not have a plural number and does not precede the article.
iii. Uncountable Noun is usually preceded by this, little, much, any, some, no etc. determiners are used.

  • This information is not correct.
  • There is little water in the glass.
  • He dies not have any money.
  • There are not much water in the tank.
  • I have little knowledge about English.
  • A little oil is left in the bottle.
