What are Compound Prepositions?

A preposition containing two or more prepositions is called a compound preposition. Also we can say, it is combination of words.

Compound prepositions are placed before nouns, pronouns, adjectives, and adverbs in a sentence by joining prepositional phrases.

Furthermore, a compound preposition is prepared by combining a prepositional or non-prepositional word and a simple prepositional word used with a noun, adjective or adverb respectively.

How to Form Compound Prepositions?

Let's understand the structure of two-word compound prepositions. The first word is usually an adjective, adverb. And the second word is a simple preposition.

Three-word compound prepositions have a different structure. Here the first and last words are simple prepositions, and the central word is either a noun or an article.
